Shelf Life of Common Kitchen Pantry Items  


A bountiful pantry makes planning dinner easier. But keep track of your inventory; some items like herbs and spices, simply lose their potency over time, while others can spoil. Take the time to examine its contents, discard expired items, and restock. Use a permanent marker to note the purchase date on the container of new items. You may want to consider these guidelines:
 

PANTRY ITEM

1. Low-acid canned goods, such as beans,
    carrots, corn, peas, soups and stews
2 to 5 years
2. Vinegar: dry pasta 2 Years
3. Chopped or minced garlic 18 Months
4. Olives; high-acid canned goods, such as
    juices, fruit, pickles, tomatoes, and foods
    in vinegar-based sauce
12 to 18 Months
5. Maple syrup; salsa; chutney; sun-dried
    tomatoes packed in oil; jarred or canned nuts
12 months
6. Olive or vegetable oils; dried mushrooms 6 months
